Maine Developmental Disabilities Council Membership
The Maine Developmental Disabilities Council is a public instrumentality in Maine – connected to State government, but operating independently. The Council engages in advocacy, capacity-building and systemic change activities. The Council is a partnership of people with developmental disabilities, family members, and state and local agencies and organizations. We work together to bring about the necessary changes to achieve self-determination and independence for persons with developmental disabilities, and full inclusion in their communities of choice.
The DD Council has 25 members from across the state. As required by federal law, two-thirds of the DD Council’s members are self-advocates and parents of children with disabilities. Those 15 members are appointed by the Governor, based on recommendations from the DD Council. The other 10 members represent state and private agencies/organizations who are involved in providing services to persons with developmental disabilities and their families.
The DD Council meets quarterly, usually in Augusta. Any support that a Council member needs to be able to participate in Council meetings is provided by the Council at no cost to the member. Council members also serve on at least one committee. Those committees meet more frequently, to discuss issues in specific topic areas: Children’s Issues, Adults’ Issues, and Public Policy activities.
